Instead of rushing back to the city jail, Jack climbed out of the SUV when they reached the parking lot. Heather met him at the front of the vehicle and grabbed his arm. "Where are you going?"

He looked down at her hand. "If it's all right with you, I'll get my briefcase and put on something that makes me look a little more professional."

"Oh. Sorry. I'm a little on edge."

"Heather," said Steve. "We don't have time for this."

She spun away from Jack and went to get Steve.

They made it to the elevator, only to find Zeke waiting for a ride up. He stood erect, with hands held loosely behind his back, as he whistled a catchy melody. "Hey, my favorite customers. When are you going to come back to the restaurant?"

"Hello, again," said Steve. "Heather was saying how impressed she was with your studio. Do you think you might have time tomorrow to show her your collection?"

Heather wasn't sure what Steve was up to, but she knew she needed to play along. "I saw some in your place the other day that caught my eye. I haven't been able to stop thinking about them."

"Sure," said Zeke with teeth in full view. "Just don't come until after lunch. I reserve mornings for painting."

"Do you work tomorrow?" asked Steve.

"I have the late shift, so I won't leave until around three in the afternoon."

The elevator chimed, and the metal doors parted. "I'll be there between one and two with my checkbook."

Heather turned to face Steve as soon as the doors closed. "Do you think he knows something about the shooting?"

Steve rubbed the back of his neck. "Possible. His apartment is closer to where the shooting took place."

"Seems unlikely," said Jack.

"Probably," said Steve. "Investigations are usually a lot of wasted time and effort looking for that one thing that seals the deal."

Another chime from the elevator and soon Steve and Heather were inside Kate's apartment while Jack jogged down the hall to their rental and a quick change of clothes.

"We need to leave everything belonging to Kate as is," said Heather.

Steve nodded. "Get everything of yours pertaining to the investigation and take it to my place. I'll grab my laptop."

"That's going to look suspicious if I take my tablet and computer. I'll put them in my room. If they come to search, I'll claim attorney-client privilege."

"No." The word came in a rush. "All Ramos has to do is get you alone. He could say you gave him permission to take your devices. You weren't there to see it, but he didn't hesitate to snatch my phone, and that was in front of witnesses."

Heather took a step forward. "He took your phone?"

"I got it back, thanks to Joy. He doesn't know I have it and that's what I want him to think."

Heather's next words dripped with sarcasm. "This sounds like a delightful story. Care to fill me in?"

"Later. For now, grab everything you need to carry on our investigation without interruption. Let's get as much out of here as we can and still be on the right side of the law.
